Confessions of an Arkeo Newbie

By Jill Pamandanan | January 22, 2009

(Jill is the new Account Executive for Arkeo. She’s young, she’s driven and she graduated with honors. She said one reason she wanted to work for Arkeo was because she liked the website. We like her already. –Ed)

December is an unusual time to start work in a new company but God gave me opportunities I could not ignore. People were offering me jobs. It was such a surprise. and at some point, a dilemma.

I am now the newest and youngest addition to Arkeofilms. I’d have to admit though that there was some competition and much mental debate. I had to choose between pursuing a life long idea I had of my future self and something entirely different (come out at the very least with a learning experience). Of course I decided to take the risk and do what was completely un-ordinary (to me). I mean there’s just no losing in joining a production house. So far, so good.

Below are a number of interesting facts:

1. Lunch is not an issue in Arkeofilms because people don’t really eat on time at the office. We usually have numerous doses of caffeine and frequent but short visits to the pantry, pinching on food here and there. A few minutes before 2 pm, people finally respond to the human lunch bell; which is me. Fortunately, I have abnormal eating habits to begin with or else working here would have been a total body shocker.

2. We are not as small as I initially thought we were. Freelancers come and go all the time, I can hardly remember, much less match faces to names. I once called James (former OJT) JH (editor). Uhh.

3. “Marketing is no longer a department. It’s an effort” – Ms. Tracy a.k.a Hitler (as she calls herself)

4. Editing suites and hard drives have names. They used to be named after human beings, now they are named after feature films.

5. When in doubt, ask the 8-ball.

‘Will I finish everything I need to do?’ – Mommy Rose.

‘Very doubtful’ – 8-ball.

Ah, wisdom.

6. The bosses don’t like their room very much. They’d much rather stay in Production — where everyone is. You can take Arkeo out of 415 (the teeny office where Arkeo was before –ed), but you can’t take out 415 from Arkeo.

7. Mang Dolfo is the best. Enough said.

Of course there’s the other stuff, like learning new terms and actually using them, making thousands of charts/client files, setting meetings and making cold calls. Training and trying. But there’s just too much of that to get into. So nevermind.*
